Chapter 16

“What’s wrong with my plan?” Zarra sighed. “You could at least pretend that it’s not the worst thing you’ve ever heard, after I woke you up and everything.”

“Alright, the goal of your plan is not shit, how’s that?” Zahira grinned. “I know you’ve missed my honesty, so don’t pretend like you’re not secretly thrilled to hear me speak my mind again. You love that about me.”

“Fine.” Zarra rolled her eyes. “Then please enlighten me and tell me what’s wrong with my plan?”

“We can’t win by attacking all of them at once,” Zahira said as she stood up and stretched. “We have to find a way to attack the dragons before they all get here at once.”

“We know there are four nests in the Underdark,” I said. “So if we station enough fighters at all the nests, we could at least keep them from coming up from the depths and overwhelming the surface.”

“Yes, but that still only affects the dragons that live in the Underdark,” Zarra pointed out. “And we don’t know how to keep the rest of them from coming down from the moon.”

“Not to worry, sweetpea,” Zahira said. “Your big sister is here now, and I’ve got a plan.”

“I thought you were twins,” I said.

“We are,” Zarra huffed. “Zahira pretends she’s older.”

“What kind of big sister would I be if I didn’t put you in your place every now and then?” Zahira cooed.

“Okay, then what’s your big plan?” Zarra sighed, but the goddess had a smirk on her face that convinced me that she loved it when her sister gave her a hard time.

“Easy.” Zahira shrugged. “We have to break the dragons’ power.”

“Okay?” Zarra raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t worry, I’ll explain,” Zahira said with a grin. “But first, what does the moon look like right now? That will determine a lot of my plan.”

“The last time I checked, it was blood red and looked like it was full of wriggling worms,” Zarra replied.

“Good, then it sounds like we still have time,” Zahira said. “I was a little worried that we might already be too late.”

“So what’s your brilliant plan?” Zarra pressed.

“Oh, I’d still like to go to Ohlavar before I tell you any details,” Zahira said with a shit-eating grin.

“Oh, my fucking— really?” Zarra groaned.

“She doesn’t like secrets being kept from her,” Zahira raised her hand to hide her mouth as she whispered sideways to me plenty loud enough for her sister to hear. “Ohhh, the irony, eh, Leo?”

“I think I like you,” I chuckled at Zarra’s twin.

“She’s being a bitch,” Zarra laughed.

“I’ll explain more once we get there,” Zahira chuckled as she winked at her sister, “but I’m gonna go crazy if I have to stay inside this server tower even a minute longer. My feet are itching to stand on the soil of my world again.”

“Let me text Chip, Garf, and Jax,” I said. “They can meet us at the lab.”

“We just met, so I’ll give you the courtesy of telling you that I’m about to read your mind,” Zahira said.
